A slightly different thought of the day – the movie Invictus

Ok, indulge me here.  It’s a little bit of a different tack for the normal thought of the day post however I hope you still find it inspiring and relevant to trading.

I’ve been away for a long weekend and during my time away I managed to re-watch the movie Invictus.  If you haven’t seen it then I would thoroughly recommend it.  It’s about the story of the South Africa and their Rugby team in the build-up to the Rugby World Cup of 1995. ( I appreciate that having enjoyed a visit to South Africa, including  Robben island, and vividly remembering the RWC of 95 I may have viewed the movie through rose-tinted spectacles however stay with me here).

It stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar the captain of the Springboks Rugby team.  Regardless of whether you love or loathe Rugby the film is a real motivational tale and one I found inspirational.

The title Invictus may be translated from the Latin as undefeated or unconquered, and is the title of a poem by English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). It’s a poem that Nelson Mandela used to help him through the tough times at Robben Island. You can decide yourself whether the poem is about inspiration or stoicism….either are applicable to traders.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
